My house mates are plotting against my gourmet aspirations. I was given a bottle of French black truffle oil for christmas last year. It sat in my cupboard since then, waiting, lurking, for an opportunity to assault my taste buds. But the time and media had to be correct for it's translation from bottle to gut.
That time never seemed to arrive. I always seemed to be too busy, or prepared food not meant for the delicate flourish of the truffle oil, shamefully once or twice I even forgot about it. And so things continued for month after month until this most recent act of domestic terrorism.
Upon return from the supermarket my newest flatmate (the jazz singer from Sydney) who shares a cupboard with me moved her goods around in such a way that mine were jostled. Gravity was unleashed and my precious tiny vessel of truffle oil was dashed upon the cold kitchen tiles.
I was aghast.
Fortunately only the neck of the bottle was snapped off, the rest remained intact, holding the lion share of the oil. That part was quickly sequestered while the floor was enriched with the remainder. The air filled with the curious flavour of truffles. I cannot attempt to describe the feeling of wiping the oil from the floor with paper towels.
Of course I was upset. But not inconsolably. Here now was the excuse that I needed to try the oil. I seized upon it. A small amount of some finely sliced chicken breast with pasta in butter plus pepper and salt (already tasting surprisingly good) was accented in the most pleasing fashion by the kiss of that fantastic oil. Is a near tragedy the right time to use a little truffle oil? Yes.
This happy result is quite in contrast to when the now ex-house mate medical student managed to smash a bottle of Russian vodka, that I went to Russia for, and had only tried one fleeting 30 mL serving of. I got over that one too, but I still miss it a little.
aaawww that's unfortunate :-(
but nevermind...at least you managed to salvage some and use it....same for the russian vodka :-p
