Pirates!

I saw Pirates of the Caribbean 3 on the weekend. It was pretty long but rather fun. Reading the reviews, some people have been taking this trilogy too seriously. It wasn't perfect but I was entertained. I didn't feel ripped off, especially because the local Greater Union (that is showing its age) is fighting for its life against the brand new Dendy, less than a block away. That means all sessions at the GU are just $8. Even so, the money might have been better spent on some better options.

I was wondering what a PhD student pirate might be like. Three words: rum flavoured noodles.

Casino Royale

Best bond film I've seen in quite a while. Daniel Craig does a great job. The boycott of the film seems completely ridiculous in the face of how well this film has been received. I think a large part of the success is that the character is different.

Craig seems very versatile. He was completely unrecognisable from his character in Enduring Love. That was the last film I had seen him in. I made that comment not realising he's been doing his thing in Hollywood for quite some time.

My favourite things about the movie might have been the opening credits (which had a delightfully stylised approach) and chase scene where Sebastian Foucan's free running (as opposed to le parkour) was used to impressive effect. The 'grittier' nature of this film compared to other bond flicks rises to the top immediately.

Highly recommended.

Star Wars geeks

So I lined up for a midnight opening of Revenge of the Sith. I guess being disappointed with a film at 2:30am is some how better than being disappointed with it at a more reasonable hour.

This was the first time I have really lined up for a film, waiting outside in the cold for two hours. The line I was in for the opening of one of the Matrix films doesn't count because it was inside and warm and it didn't seem to take that long.

It turned out be to quite social experience and not quite as hideous as I thought it might have been. All the people that dressed up made it a bit of a freak show.

There was the power-tripping security guard demanding that no one so much as take a recording device into the theatre (that meant I had to put my camera back in the car...) or hold a cell phone up to the screen or this or that... Basically if you looked suss they would just throw you out, no refunds, no re-admission. No one liked this guy and everyone made it clear.

The highlight of the line would have been either the high calorie/caffeine food, or perhaps more line specific: Two costume dorks walked past each other near a kink in the line (so lots of people could see) and one of these dorks was dressed up like a sith guy and the other like a jedi. Some one started yelling 'fight fight fight!' soon the whole line was calling it out. The two guys obliged in some tame toy light saber action, it was lame but funny.

I will never do this sort of thing again.
